Review: Something is Killing the Children

SOMETHING IS KILLING THE CHILDREN #1, an all-new original series from GLAAD Award-winning author James Tynion IV (The Woods, Justice League) and artist Werther Dell’Edera (Briggs Land) about a close-knit community rocked by a series of murders and the first appearance of Erica Slaughter, a mysterious figure who rides into town claiming she can stop the brutal murders turning their community upside down.

But the local police and authority figures don’t know what to make of this dangerous outsider who claims to believe the local kids and their rumors of monsters in the woods. Can they trust this so-called “monster” hunter with their children’s lives? Or is Erica Slaughter an unhinged killer who’ll only bring more tragedy into their community?”

When a book, especially one that isn’t from the two big boys of comics, gets multiple reprintings before it even releases, as well as switching from a limited to ongoing series, you know it’s likely going to be something special.

Specifically, it was just announced that the fourth printing will have this new cover by Lee Garbett and release 10/2:

My point is – Something is Killing the Children is definitely something special.

I was so happy I managed to grab cover A – by Werther Dell’edera – from my local shop. Only copy there, and I nearly squealed with joy when I snatched it up.

This book is some crazy, fun, dark ride. I love horror – obviously – and I love James Tynion IV’s writing, so this book was super high on my list to grab.

The story has familiar qualities, while being unique all at the same time. It runs in the same vein as IT, and even a bit of Stranger Things, but with even more darkness. This book is eerie, and gory, and beautiful. And there’s always been an elevated level of anxiety for me with horror when kids are involved, and especially when their involved and in danger.

But never fear! One of my new favorite characters is here: Erica Slaughter.

How badass is she?

Answer: very.

Werther Dell’edra does a phenomenal job with the art in this book. Miquel Muerto absolutely KILLS it on colors, as well. It’s understandable why this is a book everyone is going nuts over:

It’s damn good horror.

Have you read Something is Killing the Children? Were you able to grab a copy, or will you be hunting a reprint down?
