Review: Once & Future #12

Writer: Kieron Gillen
Artist: Dan Mora
Colors: Tamra Bonvillain
Letters: Ed Dukeshire

The veil between the Otherworld and the human world is thin, and as the story changes around Duncan and Gran, each foe becomes harder to defeat…and predict. They may be holding the line, but enemies both new and old are closing in fast, and even Gran and Duncan may not be prepared for what’s next!

Duncan plays the role of hero exceptionally well, a fateful reunion is had to conquer the mother of monsters and keep our hero alive, and Gran begins to brace herself for the darkness to come.

I’ve said it every time I review Once & Future, I think, by Gran and Duncan are two of my absolute favorite characters in comics. Their dynamic, Duncan’s reluctant but incredible heroism, Gran’s pure badassery and sass – it’s all so charming and enjoyable to read, and there’s plenty of it in this issue.

You don’t need me to tell you what an insanely beautiful book this is – it’s pretty apparent. The combination of Dan Mora and Tamra Bonvillain is one of the most gorgeous artwork pairs I’ve ever seen, with Dan’s illustrations being exquisitely enriched by the stunning colors Tamra puts on the page. I love what Ed Dukeshire does with the lettering, especially when Gran whips out the chainsaw.
